he Benefits And Limitations Of Different Types Of Language Learning

In our modern age, what with ease of travel and technological developments, we’re presented with many different ways of learning a language. There are of course the more traditional methods such as classroom and textbook learning, but with the internet you are also offered many more ways to learn. Each of these have their own pros and cons for the particular lifestyle of the individual. Here we try and weigh up which method would suit you as a language learner.

Online/Text Book

This is probably the most basic way of learning a language, you can either subscribe to a website or buy a text book. Here you are limited because you must find time to learn, whereas if you have joined a course or evening class then you have to learn at a certain time every week or day. You also miss out on the chance to practise with others. This method is perhaps better for those who already have a certain level of the language and just need a top-up.

If you’re busy with a career or other education, you don’t often have much time to take a course or move abroad . The main benefits of this method are that it is much cheaper and less likely to disrupt the other parts of your life. But there are also many drawbacks such as the lack of individuals to practise with or an authority figure to mentor you. Without this tutor or teacher, you are also left to learn on your own timetable and therefore you could become lazy with your learning.

Summer Camps

An extremely popular and successful way of learning is to move to the county of the language and study. In the UK you will have noticed groups of foreign students in the bigger cities, most of these people are probably studying at an English summer camp. When you’re immersed like this in something, you will learn it much quicker. This method is much more expensive though and if you have a career and family to think about then it can be rather difficult to just move abroad for a couple of months.

Classroom

One of the main aspects that is missing from internet, textbook and MP3 learning is the fact that you miss out on interaction with others. With classroom learning, you’re constantly surrounded by other students who you can practise with. You also have a tutor or teacher who can correct mistakes and make sure you turn up on time and attend lessons. There are countless classes all over the UK to learn languages at, with many different Spanish, Italian and French language school options available.
